Capital Area Literacy Coalition
MISSION:
The Capital Area Literacy Coalition helps children and adults learn
to read, write and speak English with an ultimate goal of helping individuals
achieve self-sufficiency. We achieve this through direct services and
by enhancing literacy efforts of community organizations in the Capital
Area and throughout the state of Michigan.
Migrant Literacy Project:
Volunteers in the Migrant Literacy Project teach reading and writing
and English as a Second Language to Hispanic adults and children temporarily
living in area migrant camps. Localities vary depending on season and
growing schedules. Most camps are about a half hour drive away from
Lansing. Carpooling is available.
Components of the Migrant Literacy Project include:
" Helping adults and children improve their basic reading and writing
skills
" Tutoring for adults who need to learn to speak English and improve
their English skills
" Guidance in searching for jobs and increased income
" G.E.D. Preparation
" Vision screening tests
" Access to internet via laptop computers
